Engine overhaul gave Bergen Tankers a profit of millions

One A comprehensive overhaul of the main engine on the ship Bergen Energy is proving to provide significant benefits both financially and environmentally. The climate accounts now show that the measure provides Bergen Tankers AS with estimated savings of over one million kroner annually, in addition to cutting CO2 emissions equivalent to 158 tons per year.

A strategic focus on maintenance

In October 2024, Bergen Energi entered the shipyard for planned maintenance. Among the most important measures was the overhaul of the main engine (CAT 3508), carried out by Anlegg og Marine Service In addition, the hull, propeller and thrusters were overhauled.

The goal was to increase operational reliability, but the results show that the maintenance measure has also yielded impressive financial and environmental savings.

Significant reduction in fuel and emissions

Following the measures implemented at the shipyard, fuel consumption has been reduced from 80–85 liters per hour to 70–75 liters per hour at normal cruising speed (8 knots). This results in annual diesel savings of approximately NOK 825,000, based on an estimate of 5,000 operating hours and a fuel price of NOK 16.50 per liter.

At the same time, CO2 emissions have been reduced per hour by approximately 26.6 kg CO2, which in one year gives an annual reduction of approximately 158.5 tons per year. With a CO2 tax of NOK 590 per ton, this corresponds to an annual saving of approximately NOK 93,500. This is estimated for 2025.

Another important result is reduced oil consumption. Previously, about 5 liters of oil were used per day, while now the consumption is down to one liter. This is due to leaks being repaired in connection with the engine work. The reduction represents an annual saving of just over 83,000 kroner, based on 208 operating days and an oil price of 100 kroner per liter.

In total, the total annual savings are estimated at over one million kroner, a sum that means that the investment in the engine overhaul will be paid off in less than two years.

Increased profitability and lower climate footprint

The results achieved from the overhaul show how targeted maintenance measures can have a great effect, and at the same time be a very profitable investment. The savings achieved exceed 1 million kroner per year, and reduce the risk of engine failure. In addition, the measure contributes to a more environmentally friendly operation of the vessel. By overhauling the engine instead of replacing it with a new engine, costs have been reduced while achieving significant environmental benefits.

Based on these results, we recommend that Bergen Tankers AS continues to prioritize maintenance and upgrades that can reduce fuel consumption and emissions on its vessels. This will not only be good for the environment, but also for the company's bottom line.

At a time when both the market and the authorities are setting higher demands for emission reduction, Bergen Energy shows that old engines can still perform well with proper follow-up.
