Common Mode
Surveys & Mitigation
Common Mode currents can develop in marine electrical systems, particularly those incorporating variable-speed drives, power converters and other power electronics.
If not properly controlled, these currents can contribute to electrical interference, premature bearing damage and unwanted electrical currents passing through a vessel's structure and machinery.
Solving the Common Mode Challenge:
A Common Mode survey helps identify and measure these currents, investigate their root causes and determine appropriate mitigation strategies. This can help vessel operators:
Reduce the risk of electrical interference and equipment damage
Help prevent premature bearing wear and electrical corrosion
Improve equipment reliability and operational availability
Reduce unplanned maintenance, downtime and associated costs
What we deliver:
Every project begins with a structured investigation based on the system architecture. Our Marine Electrical Engineers carry out a root-cause analysis and build their hypothesis prior to carrying out any measurements.
• Project Review
System architecture and documentation are reviewed in-house.
• On-board survey: CM voltage and current are measured on board under real operating conditions, and the physical installation is surveyed.
• Report: A written service report documents the as-found condition, quantified CM levels, root causes, and a prioritized action plan.
• Implementation : Supply and installation of all CM rings, line absorbers, HF braids, with no intervention in the Frequency Converter. All class certifications and supplier warranties remain intact, and the vessel may continue normal operations during implementation.
• Verification Report : Following installation of all current mitigation components, final measurements are taken to verify reductions achieved.
